The author became interested in male prostitution while researching populations susceptible to AIDS. He found such a population in male prostitutes in Times Square which had developed a community to deal with common problems. Among these changing the community were AIDS, crack cocaine, and urban redevelopment. This work is directed to sociologists, social workers, and those interested in popular culture.
Dr. McNamara was my Sociology teacher at Furman University in my senior year last year, and I had the opportunity to read this book then. He approaches the information contained in the book with objectivity as well as empathy, and his skills as a sociologist become strikingly evident in the course of the book as different boys are willing to talk to him about different issues dealing with their profession. I like the narrow focus he used. He was able to show a more detailed look into the lives of several young men, their daily routines, their prices, their typical clients, and the negative consequences that befell some. This to me is much better, the intimate view, then a bunch of statistics about a much larger piece of the pie. Dr. McNamara's research was conducted with accuracy, patience, interest, and heart, and it shows in this book.
Very insightful and interesting! Easy to read!

Once I opened this book, I did not put it down until I was finished. I found myself immersed in the lives of these men (hustlers) who were so brilliantly portrayed by McNamara. This book is a very insightful account of the little known phenomenon of male prostitution. I highly recommend it.
