This is a comprehensive collection of American short stories starting with Washington Irving and going through to Ann Beatie. All of the writers are very well known and I make no attempt to rate the stories. One could make the argument that these are not the best short stories from each author, but as a group it is an impressive collection. It is best to look at the book that you will buy before completing the transaction since some copies are over 20 years old. The book came out in approximately 1981, was re-published and is available under two different ISBN reference numbers plus one other number,i.e.: ASIN B000IQKI26. I assume they are all similar but there might be small variations in re-printing. I bought one of the later printings. It is an excellent value.
