When I came across this book, I thought it would be one of those works devoted to a single ship. It was only when I sat down to study the content that I discovered it to be full of basic information which I - as a diver and shipwreck historian, ought to know. And yet, at the same time, the book is simply excellent for children because of the way in which specific detail is explained. With an introduction which expands into a description of the way in which boats float, steer and sail, already we find a high-class cutaway module of a steam powered tugboat. This is followed by sections of triremes, riverboats, yachts, ferries, engines, lifeboats, powerboats, container ships, tugs, cruise ships, submersibles and much more besides. Each section contains at least one cutaway view of the type of vessel in question - in some cases and exploded view of different decks. So, if you really would like to know what an Orlop deck is or how a steam engine works, you could do a lot worse than study this book in order to gain an general appreciation. NM
