Starting with the principles of colour theory, Hill presents an analysis of 40 popular pigments with important descriptions of colour temperature, transparency or opacity and degree of stain.' This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is Very similar to "Color for the Watercolor Painter" that was printed in 1982. This was printed in 1992. All the pictures are printed in color. Mr. Hill suggests exercises to familiarize yourself with your brushes, paints, and color mixing. He starts with a list of color terms so that you know what he is talking about. He gives exercises, with examples of his own results from doing the exercises to learn how different watercolors interact with each other. It is an essential guide for beginners who want to learn how to go from 3 primary colors to a endless array of colors. The information on color in light and shadow in chapter 7 is worth much more than the price of the book!!!! Mr Hill shows with photos how a box, cylinder, and ball are affected by light in first a color neutral background, then in backgrounds with color to demonstrate how color of surrounding objects affect the shadow. I haven't seen that so clearly demonstrated in any other book I own. On page 81 he puts a shadow over half of 5 bands of color: white, yellow, red, blue, and green. Then he shows and tells how he makes the color to match the shadow color. Then he has 10 demonstrations where he show how he puts in shadows , warm or cool, to show shape, form, and time of day. Hats off to a WONDERFUL learning experience!

Great book, very imformative...at first when I flipped through the book it seem as though it would be a bit over my head, but when I actually sat down and went through it step by step and followed the colour guides it is definately one of the most helpful books for a beginner. Practise the six different colour palette's and you immediately begin to understand more about colour, complimentary, analogous, high key, low key...Highly recommended

This book is still a classic from one of the century's most respected watercolorists. Tom Hill is widely recognized as one of the great painting teachers and has influenced many of todays artists, including me. What I like about this book are Tom's examples of fresh color combinations, and use of color in shadow areas.
