Book Overview

Young love means everything . . . until it leaves you with nothing.

The summer before her senior year of high school, Laney Jacobs and her best friend jump from a six-story beachside cliff in an attempt to impress their boyfriends. Laney rose from the water. Her friend did not.

Six years later, when Laney's troubled mother's memoir hits the bestseller list airing the family's destructive secrets, Laney is forced to relive the trauma, this time in the public eye. To escape the scrutiny, she seeks shelter at her estranged grandmother's seaside inn. But she can't reconcile the loving woman with the heartless parent in her mother's book. As she looks for answers, the ex-boyfriend who'd witnessed her darkest days reappears, stirring up both pain and hope.

When her mother's vindictive fans threaten her grandmother's livelihood and the lighthouse Laney has come to love, she turns to the century-old words of a young lighthouse keeper to help her find the courage to move forward. But once truths from the past come to light and old love finds new beginnings, will Laney discover that forgiveness is the only way toward true healing?

Journey of grief, hope, reconciliation

"Trouble is, change is hard work. Not for the faint of heart, but sometimes God in his grace does the heavy lifting for us." Ah, it's been a while since I've picked up a Heidi Chiavaroli book. It's good to be back! The book flows so smoothly even when it addresses very difficult topics. Laney has huge trauma in her life and her heartbreak, guilt, and shame are so real. Jason also battles heartbreak, guilt, and shame but is further along on the path to healing and shows Laney what steadfast loyal love looks like. Their first person present tense voices are raw, honest, and tender. Their journey to forgiveness is admirable. I loved learning about Maine lighthouses and the incredible history behind them. The 1800s journal entries that are interspersed throughout the story were amazing glimpses into the lives of the brave lightkeepers and their families. I loved Laney's grandmother and her wisdom. It was also fun to see her connection with the Martin family from the author's previous book series. It looks like this may be the first in the series - I can't wait to read the next book and visit another beautiful lighthouse in Maine. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
