Rusty Shannon's life becomes even more entwined with Andy Pickard's, Badger Boy, as Texas is filled with outlaws, ex Confederate raiders, Indian raids, and the KKK. Elmer Kelton has given us what Texas was like during this period of history like few other authors ever have. I can endorse this book as a lover of the Old West--the historical Old West--not some imaginary place filled with unrealistic characters and violence.

This is the fourth Elmer Kelton book I have read this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are looking for an authentic western with believable plot and story line ... you can't go wrong with Elmer Kelton. Staged in the reconstruction years of early Texas, it weaves a wonderful story of strong characters and even stronger family ties. Mr. Kelton is an accomplished writer that could write successfully in any genre. Thankfully, he likes Westerns.
