"No one weaves a tribal story quite like Robert Conley. Conley's books are entertaining, colorful, and chock-full of tribal history and culture."--Wilma P. Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a interesting story about a young trader named Carrier, Cherokee, whom journeys to Florida to trade. He has heard countless stories about the hairy white men, Spaniards, whom have recently visited coastal tribes. Carrier portrays the naive and innocence of past civilization; He is not greedy, selfish, or evil. He only wants to trade with these strange men, wanting to know about them. Expecting men willing to trade, he witnesses first hand the cruelty and savagery the white men offer. These men have not come to trade, but to conquer. I wont spoil the ending but it is a good read. It helps non-indigenous people understand our culture and tradition. Conley casts vivid images of a civilization lost in time and a land that was once pure and full of wonder. The history of the Spaniards is also well told, not of explorers how modern day scholars would like to deceive students, but the harsh truth; invaders enslaving purity, raping the land in search of fortune.
