Even though I love fantasy novels, and the author said right up front that this wasn't a fantasy, the story caught me up and kept me going until the last page. I hope this isn't the only story about Tasha and their resistance movement. When she was in her father's house--which has been taken over by a thoughtless, uncaring dictator, just like the kingdom--my heart was pounding. A Beautiful Tale

"The White Dove" is clear and concisely written. Although Ms. Bartholomew tells us at the beginning that this is not a fairy tale, for there is no magic, etc., it is hard not to describe it as otherwise. The land in which Tasha lives seems so magical, and yet, reminds me, for a very strange reason, of early England. Maybe it was the descriptions of the government (monarchy which later turns democratic and then turns into a dictatorship) or the countryside (rolling hills, dark forests, hidden caves, crashing rivers) or the people themselves that reminded me of England. Oh, I don't know what I'm saying anymore. Chalk this one up to good ol' insanity. Just read the book. The story may not be magical, but the words themselves are spellbinding.

I picked up the book intending to read only for a short time but couldn't put it down till I finished it. I promptly handed it to my 16 year-old daughter to read, too. It's an interesting adventure that is free of sex and violence, and one you don't have to worry about your kids reading!
