The Woman Outside the Walls: A completely gripping WW2 historical novel about a heartbreaking secret

I always knew it would come out one day. They are finding everyone who has stayed hidden. They would have come to me in the end.

Hamburg, 1942

Seventeen-year-old Anna knows she can never tell her proud parents the truth about where she is going. She must hide the fact that she is pregnant, that the father of her unborn child is dead and that she is on her way to a special maternity home, where her baby will be given to a perfect family. She tells herself that this is the best solution. She doesn't expect to feel the rush of love for her beautiful baby boy in the white blanket, or the devastation when he is snatched from her, never to be seen again.

Desperate to forget her grief, she sees an advert for a secretary in a prison, far away in the east. Days later, she leaves Hamburg, travelling eastwards by train, feeling as if a whole new life is about to begin. It is the biggest mistake she will ever make.

London, 2016

Ninety-year-old Anna sits on the edge of her bed, hands trembling, eyes brimming with tears, as she looks at the picture of the soldier in the newspaper. Her friends and neighbours know her as a kindly old lady who bakes cakes and always has time to listen to their troubles. They don't know about the hated green uniform she burned, the memories of the prisoners she tried to help and the bombed and blackened city she once called home. But now the time for a reckoning has come, will revealing the truth free Anna or destroy her?

A gripping read that will break your heart and have you hooked, perfect for fans of The Alice Network, The Nightingale and My Name is Eva. The Woman Outside the Walls will take you on an emotional journey and show you that in war, even when you are on the wrong side, you can still do the right thing...

Germany during and after the war

Excellant story...about one girl in Hamburg Germany...whose life is thrown into different situations...from the age of 17...through the years of the war and after. It's full of different characters..that break your heart..from all the horrible situations that the young ones endure ...and the strength they have to survive through the harsh realities of a bombed out city and country. With harsh living conditions...no plumbing...water...toilets, houses burned to ash...dead people laying under rumble...decaying Corpses all around them, infestations of bugs and rats, no clothes, Food, soap..warm coats and boots...anything that would give them relief and comfort..have all been lost. All they have is each other..their small little gang..living in a bombed out cellar..trying to survive day to day. Anna is the main character in this heartfelt story...that brings you her full story before...during ..and after the war. She is rescued by a British officer who has fallen for her..and wants to bring her back to England..to marry her and start a new life. Her life over the many years with her husband has been very good...it is now 2016...and she sees once again in the papers how Nazi hunters are still searching...for the ones that are guilty. At 90...Anna..is tired of hiding who she is..and what she did during the war. But is a mear secretary considered a Nazi and Killer ? She did not harm, or hurt or kill anyone..she tried to help anyway she could...but if she is found..will she be just as guilty? . A Young adult herself.. at 19 when she worked as a secretary in a prison encampment. In the beginning she wasen't aware of what was happening..she never saw the prisoners..but as the camp got fuller..she was aware of the harsh inhumane treatment they endured at the hands of the guards ..and eventually the death marches . The memories never leave her or the scars they caused. In telling her story...will it free her or destroy her ? Excellant story ...very well described and written..making you feel their suffering and struggles. Its rises you to ask..how do you judge the people that were forced them selves to do what they knew was wrong. What can one person do..to save someone from the horrors...when its YOU against a whole army of Nazi's that would put a bullet in your head in a blink of an eye. Are they excused because they were following orders ? They are a generation that were shaped and molded through propaganda and brain washing...and who should pay the price in the end ? Very difficult question..given so many scenarios of what they were forced to do..in the name of the Fuhrer. Some..( alot) will get a definite...Guilty without a doubt ..pay the price of hanging for their sins ...others...are harder to condemn....really makes you think long and hard. Only God knows the real truth of the guilty and the innocent.
