This indispensable guide to the finest finishing techniques is now better than ever, with color photos, more illustrations to show additional stains, and an expanded text. And both newcomers and skilled woodworkers will discover a wealth of enlightening material. The large first section covers all the basics, leading those who have never before applied a finish through the entire process, from wood preparation right to the last coat. Experienced finishers eager to broaden their creative horizons will go straight to the advanced ideas. Many of these traditional techniques-- including French polishing, wood graining, and chemical staining-- have been largely forgotten during the past few years, but their effects are hard to duplicate by any other means. "A Selection of the F & W Book Club."
I was recommended to buy this book by a professional furniture restorer and refinisher. It's one of the best books on the subject. It starts out with a section on wood preperation that goes into how to get the surface ready to apply the various finishes. What I liked was how Sam Allen explains the different tools and how to sharpen them which is very important to know. Once the surface is smoothed then it goes into the tools to use to apply the finish and then to the actual finishes and technigues used for all the types of finishes. I highly recommend this book and after reading it you will come away with such a complete knowledge of finishing from A to Z.
