Amazing, ordinary, painful, joyous and inspirational 'coming out' stories from a wide range of young men and women. The book explores the best ways of combating the fear many people face before telling their family members about their sexuality; the means by which young people can express their pride and help fight prejudice; and the all-important process of building strong and lasting relationships with gay friends and partners. There is a unique interactive role-play section for groups of friends to work from in developing the ideas and themes in the book. Ideal for schools, youth groups and colleges.
Not so much a `how to' manual on coming out, as a collection of those defining moments of coming out, to oneself, and other people. Again and again, I found myself thinking `yes, that's how it is'. The book originated in a cabaret show by Sutcliffe, a performer and drama teacher, and incorporates many of the stories she received from people who had seen the show. As a result, the book has the feel of performance to it: the stories are punchily told, often graphic, full of humour and emotion. Although Sutcliffe's characters are from all over the world, the bulk are British, which makes a refreshing change from the predominantly US-based works which are generally available. This is an excellent book for anyone needing support in coming out, or for anyone trying to understand the feelings of s lesbian, gay or bisexual loved-one.
