Third of Eleven

Long before she was a grandmother to eight, Jane was third of eleven children growing up in Lahore, VA. Her life didn't seem very different from her country neighbors in the 1920s- "everyone was being affected by The Great Depression"-so, she shares her childhood memories through details she believed might interest her grandchildren. Rediscovered 30 years later by those same grandchildren, her writing allows us to share an unexpected story.

Jane Baker Smith may not be part of your family tree; however, you will be drawn into her stories anyway. You will start thinking about your relatives as more than just names. "We walked to school which was three miles from home. It was hard walking when snow was on the ground because sometimes it would hold us up and other times we would fall through. It was always worth it because we knew we would get a treat when we arrived. Our teacher would have a big kettle of hot chocolate heating on the wood stove. I failed to mention it was a two-room school with grades one through seven. "
