Poetry. The three poems found in "Three, " titled "The Three Friends," "Ultimate Things," and "Biography in a Hat," show the author's growning concern with mortality and the purpose and correct use of life. The first poem, "The Three Friends," is an exploration of cancer survival in four parts. Philbrick treats these topics using lines and rhythms that are Biblical, Whitmanesque, and rich with nouns and images that allow the reader to see and feel what the poet does. Stephen Philbrick's poems have appeared in many journals, such as Massachusets Review, The New Yorker, Chouceau, and Poetry Now.
