A rousing science fiction debut from Michael Dorn, Worf of the immensely popular Star TrekT television series and films. After cultural anthropologist Tony Millers plane is blown off course, he must land on a strange tropical island. The natives capture Miller and force him to run a deadly gauntlet through the jungle towards a strangely glowing boulder that they worship as a god. With a combination of luck and resourcefulness, Miller is able to quell the natives, and return to his lab at UC Berkeley to examine part of the boulder. But enroute, during a raging electrical storm, the rock is dislodged, crashing to earth... literally ripping Time/Space in the process.
Devouring the book in one day I found it an enjoyable read. Yes, there were plenty of inconsistent action, but there were some good twists to keep me on my toes. Being a Star Trek fan made me buy the book, but the story itself kept me with it until I finished. The action was good...and the setup of the main character was very "renaissance" like with the military to academic background. Yes, I want to be like Tony. The back of the book is a bit misleading and I was slightly confused, there are books with worse that I have read so I won't hold them accountable for it.I'm now off to find the second book of the series...
A spectacular twisted view of a fairly common theme

Michael Dorn captures your attention early in this brilliant novel and doesn't let go until the last word of the last parragraph. The imagery is the best I've seen in pop Sci-Fi in years! I can honestly say that I haven't been this excited about a sci-fi novel since the first time I read Ringworld.Miller, the main character, is portrayed in a fashion that allows you to actually think like him, almost anticipating how he will handle each step of his convoluted trip. And, what a trip! The authors propensity to twist and manipulate reality keeps you at the edge of your seat the entire page-flipping, gut wrenching experience. The last page, though tieing up most of the myriad tendrils of the story, creates whole new questions; leaving the reader thirsty for more of the intoxicating obserdeity of Millers grand trek. This is a must read for any fan of the limits of imagination, and the excitement of classic Sci-fi. I can hardly wait for the sequel.
Wonderful storyline.

Michael Dorn's book keeps the reader thinking. Once you understand one part, he changes the setting and parameters of the character's life. I can't wait for the second book.

I recently purchased and read this tremendously well written novel. Michael Dorn has truly written a masterpiece of science fiction/fantasy. The plot although one of fantasy depicts a battle between two factions of future humans. The Bodhi and the GECO. The Bodhi are in tune with nature and are of kind sentiment. The GECO are genetically altered humans who live off of pollution. The Bodhi are kind and friendly while the GECO are brutal and evil. An object, The Artifact, which maintains linear time is destroyed by the Bodhi. The main character, Tony Miller alone can alter the future. An excellent novel with a cliffhanger ending, this novel is bound for greatness.
