Recognized as one of America's most gifted young writers, Elizabeth Tallent presents a collection of stories that show her skills and emotional range. Her special territory is the complicated geometry of emotions between men a nd women, parents and their children.--The New York Times.
Generally, I am not a fan of minimalist writing, but Elizabeth Tallent is one of those writers who can make anything work, especially the short story. This series of short stories are inter-connected. Almost all of the stories deal with relationships where partners cheat on one another with little guilt; where their relationships reflect the lack of depth they each possess as individuals. Most of the characters are yuppy types who are self-centered and materialistic. They are well-educated professionals but lack roots and core values. They are spiritually bereft and faced continuously with self-doubt. They see themselves as lost but don't know how to find themselves. It shows the power and talent of the writer when one can enjoy their stories even though the characters are not likable or empathetic. Elizabeth Tallent has a great talent, one that I'm sure will grown even greater over time.
