One of several novels about the Darringers, men known to be fast guns but who are gentlemen. Jess and his brother Sam (see Sam's story in Trail of the Restless Gun) head north to find the men who killed Sue Ellen, a teacher who lived alone, because their mother felt Jess was the man who could find the murderers. Jess and Sam enter Buzzard's Creek to find themselves in the middle of the Hatcher-Colby feud with a side, subplot about a con-man bent on stealing the money the town gathered for a railroad spur. Add in a little romance between Auralie Hatcher and Neal Colby, and Lorena Colby and Jess Darringer (with Jess running hard to escape). With penny-ante rustling by the Hatchers, the Colbys' intent to continue running things as they always have, and Sue Ellen's murder laid to the Hatchers, this is a busy novel. Not in the L'Amour tradition but good reading just the same.
