Book Overview

From a writer whom the New York Times dubbed Canada's "Generation X laureate" comes a quartet of haunting, unforgettable tales of young people stuck in the inescapable prison of family

A New York Times Notable Book and winner of Britain's prestigious Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize, Traplines is the book that introduced the world to Canadian author Eden Robinson. In three stories and a novella, Robinson explodes the idea of family as a nurturing safe haven through a progression of domestic horrors experienced by her young, often helpless protagonists. With her mesmerizing, dark skill, the author ushers us into these worlds of violence and abuse, where family loyalty sometimes means turning a blind eye to murder, and survival itself can be viewed as an act of betrayal.

In the title story, for a teenager named Will growing up on a Native reserve in northwestern Canada, guilt, race, and blind fidelity are the shackles chaining him to the everyday cruelty and abuse he is forced to endure. In "Dogs in Winter," a girl recalls life with her serial-killer mother and fears for her own future. A young teen and the sadistic, psychopathic cousin who comes to live with him engage in a cat-and-mouse game that soon escalates out of control in "Contact Sports," while in the final story, "Queen of the North," a young Native girl deals in her own way with sexual molestation at the hands of a pedophile uncle.

Each of these tales is vivid, intense, and disturbing, and Robinson renders them unforgettable with her deft flair for storytelling and a surprising touch of humor.

In your face!

I recently read Traplines and was very impressed. I really liked the fact that she didn't tip toe around anything, her stories were right in your face. They were dark and mysterious; even humourous at times.

Your problems are child's play in retrospect to these!

Just when you thought that these peoples problems couldn't get any worse, they do. Eden makes you realize the misfortunes of others and the horrors of many peoples lives.

Canadian proof we're as werid and eccentric as anyone else.

Four stories so magnetic you feel exhausted after finishing--this is Traplines. The saleswoman who sold this to me in a quaint little bookstore in Victoria said this, "Tarantino comes to British Columbia." Enough said. This is the underbelly of BC, the Vancouver, the reserves, the small towns that exist, but no one writes about, until now. This is a superb collection of stories that might just push Canadian authors into the mainstream yet.

Traplines is an excellent book. Eden Robinson should write more, because her ability to find a correct treatment for a character or subject is amazing. If you are smart, you will like this book.

You'll wish it didn't have to end

In TRAPLINES, Eden Robinson gives us four stories set on a Haisla reservation in British Columbia. The stories feature children from lower-income families that are cramped into small apartments, and others with big houses that are well stocked with two cars, VCRs, and the like. Robinson captures what it is like to grow up as an underprivileged youth in a troubled family, but avoids being judgmental or "preachy". Robinson shows her readers a darker side of life, but uses straightforward language and sharp images in a fast-paced, upbeat way that every reader can enjoy. -- reviewed by Echoes Magazine http://users.aol.com/echoesma
