True Believers

Sometimes God chooses a child to atone for the sins of the parent, says the black preacher, Otha Lee, in this story of faith, heritage, and reconciliation. Set in the 1950’s rural South, Dorrell’s first novel will hook Southern fiction lovers of all ages. She masterfully presents authentic, well-rounded characters who are allowed to doubt and explore profound theological issues that don’t have simple, pat answers. True Believers also keeps readers entranced with an unpredictable plot.Peggy Nickles, a cotton heiress, has bought a dilapidated church and weed-covered cemetery, much to the embarrassment of her sisters. As a further disgrace, she plans to squander her money on fixing it up and giving it to a local black congregation that has no building of its own. Facing opposition from their racist community, Peggy, Otha Lee, and an itinerant carpenter begin the restoration. Clues to deceitful secrets of the past are inadvertently revealed in the process, making a generation recovering from the sins of their predecessors more determined to stand for what is right. From the book: Elder Otha Lee Sturgis, pastor of the Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, sat back on the front porch of his rundown tar-papered shack and reflected on the words of the previous Sunday’s sermon. He pulled up his head to spot Miss Peggy Nickles’ ice blue Cadillac convertible peeling down the dusty dirt road leading to his home. He stood, straightened his suspenders, and donned a tattered straw hat before ambling out to greet her. What brings y’all way out here into no-man’s-land? he said, tipping his hat and opening the car door for her.Peggy cleared her throat. To betruthful, Otha Lee, I came to make you a business proposition.Come on up here on the porch and sit, he said, gesturing to a faded rocking chair. Now what’s on your mind, Miss Peggy?Peggy sat on the edge of the rocker, looking down at her skirt, then into Otha Lee’s eyes.If you’ll help me restore it, I will give you the deed to the church.Otha Lee thanked the Lord he was sitting. He fanned himself briskly. Bless your heart, Miss Peggy, but your daddy’s turning over in his grave about now.

Well written story; strong characters

Ms Dorrell brings to life the people, the place, and the time. The strands of the story flow together naturally. This book did not try to be a good book. It is a good book.

Sparks The Imagination

This is one of the BEST reads I have had in long time (and I have done a considerable amount of reading).Ms.Dorrell had given us a real gem here.I could totally imagine every scene as I went through the book. The story is touching and you find yourself rooting for the characters.I was lost in this story. In a time when we are told that only sex, violence and crude behavior is what sells,I am glad that there are still some people who are giving us product that moves us and entertains us without those things.I recommend this book to anyone who longs for a book that will give you a cozy feeling.

Add to Personal Collection

I checked this book out at the local library and enjoyed it so much until I had to order it for my own personal library. The relationship between the main character and the minister was admirable. I have recommended this book as a read for my book club and recommend it for others as well.

A must read!!!!!!

This is one of the best stories that I have ever read. This a must read not only for Christian women but women everywhere. A true story of love and faith.

Timeless lessons on the human spirit

Linda Dorrell's True Believers is the riveting and highly recommended story of Peggy Nickles, a Southern woman whose work of charity results in harsh family confrontations, social expectations, and racism in her 1950s rural community. Woven into the fabric of a compelling story are timeless lessons on the human spirit and the spiritual/emotional resources of the Christian gospel in the face of physical and cultural obstacles to establishing loving relationships and nurturing communities of faith.
