This is a bilingual book to honor the Most Venerable Th ch Tuệ Sỹ. He is an erudite scholar of Buddhism, a former full professor of Van Hanh University in Saigon, writer, poet, translator, and a dissident of the Vietnamese government. He is the Standing Executive Officer of the Supreme Patriarchate of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (GHPGVNTN). As the translators put it, "You're a venerable Zen master, a highly virtuous monk deserving of the title "Long Tượng - Nāga - The Great Master," the teacher of many teachers, full of compassion, wisdom, courage, and patience. He consistently demonstrated the practice of aligning your actions with the principles and knowledge that you impart to the collective. Your examples of living and leading by example serve as a guideline for us to learn, practice, and serve others."

It is said that prison can change a person, offering a new perspective, and that confinement limits space and freedom. In another sense, it can also focus the mind to think deeper, revealing a clarity that exposure to the outside world might not. For the Venerable Tue Sy, two truths are realized in his poems-the beautiful and the tragic, the young and the old, the known and the invisible.

Tue Sy never complains or laments of his imprisonment. Instead, his sorrow for his country and the beauty of dreams are woven together in his poems to elucidate the complexities of our being in this life and the mysteries of the next. Keith Carmona, IB English instructor.
