Two women, a century apart, are bound by a haunting secret aboard a legendary steamboat.Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure. As wedding coordinator for the 100-year-old steamboat The Belle of Louisville, Devyn Asbury takes pride in seeing others' dreams come true, even though her engagement had sunk like a diamond ring to the bottom of the Ohio River. When the Belle becomes a finalist in the Timeless Wedding Venue contest, Devyn endeavors to secure the prestigious title with hopes to reclaim some of her professional dreams. What she hadn't planned on was Chase Jones showing up with a mysterious photo from the 1920s. A century earlier, Hattie Louis is as untamable as the rivers that raised her. As the adopted daughter of a steamboat captain, her duties range from the entertainment to cook. When strange incidents occur aboard the boat, Hattie's determined to discover the truth. Even if that means getting under First Mate Jack Marshall's handsome skin.
"Then and there Devyn decided her happiness would not hinge on circumstances. She could be filled with joy despite the changes in life."
Rachel Scott McDaniel has penned some great historical fiction that I loved and this novel is clearly her best work yet. In this dual timeline novel, Hattie from the late 1920s speaks to us in first person narrative while Devyn from present time engages us in third person perspective. I loved how a steamboat that has weathered history and age ties the two women's lives together. The author's beautiful and vivid descriptions made me feel like I was a part of the steamboat's crew and a part of the river in both timelines. Hattie and Jack's relationship is sweet, tender, and passionate while Devyn and Chase's interactions and dialogue are cute, witty, fun, and full of sass and flirtations. The underlying tension and suspense in the mystery of who Hattie was and what happened to her is quite delicious, as are the twists and turns in the plot. With well-written, captivating prose and dialogue, a clever and seamless plot, lovable characters, and a nice thread of finding faith and one's true identity, Undercurrent of Secrets is sure to please every reader.
I received the book from Barbour Publishing and also via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
