During WWII, Joseph C. Milner, at the age of nineteen enlisted in the Navy. Completing sub school at Groton, Ct. he was assigned to the USS Aspro (SS-309). In his own words he describes life aboard a diesel submarine. The Aspro spent its missions hunting Japanese ships and rescuing downed pilots from the Bay of Tokyo. The Aspro was involved in some of the most dangerous rescues of World War II. After taking forty six depth charges Joe wondered why there was a brown substance under his shoes.
