In 1975, the war that had raged for more than a decade in Vietnam was ending. Because of the United States involvement in the war, U.S. armed forces helped many Vietnamese to escape a grim situation and relocate in America. In the years that followed, many other people escaped by boat, enduring perilous journeys that often ended in years spent in refugee camps. Most of these refugees came to the United States with no knowledge of English or any understanding of the American culture. Over the years, the Vietnamese American community has grown strong and today it helps make America a strong and diverse nation.
