i just got back from Bosnia, including the city of Mostar, and decided to learn more about the war there. So I found an old copy of the film; "Welcome to Sarajuevo", and this book too. This is the best book I've ever read about the life of a war correspondant. It also gave more info than the film. I'd found the film confusing the first time I'd seen it. After reading the book I see why they made a film out of it. I'm very curious to see what ever happened with this young adoptee, Natasha. I think of her a lot because the story made her come alive. As I regard my own non-adopted 8-yr-old daughter, I see the same sorts of behavior of Natasha, after Natasha's adoption, when she became a bit spoiled in England. I'm encouraged that this child was so resilient that she turned from a floor-sweeping, hard worker to a normal difficult-to-motivate-for-chores child. Does that mean my own child might also have a chance to be a hard-worker? This is a very moving, worthwhile story for adoptees, adoptors and people interested in the recent history of Yugoslavia.

I find the book not only informative about the history of the balkans, but it also provides a breathtaking account of the hardships vivited upon the Bosnian people cruelity that was visisted upon Bosnia and its children thanks to the ethnic cleasnisng project engineered and conducted by Serb nationalists. Indeed, Mr Nicholson is not only a good story teller, but he is a jouralist whose account of the Bosnian war is filled with depth, compassion and courage. I have read this book over and over again, and it is simply difficult to put down. I recommened it to students of the balkan history and those who want to follow a career in journalism and creative writing. Welcome to sarajevo is a masterpiece!!!
