While the US is increasingly heterogeneous ethnically, this is not necessarily true in every community or school. The authors address the issue of those schools, public or private, where all (or effectively all) the students are white. How then to teach about a diverse broader society? The book also looks specifically at the makeup of private schools. Many upper and middle class families have put their children into these schools. Where the ethnicity tends to be more white than in the public schools, at least in the large metropolitan areas. Perhaps as a counterweight to oft-repeated murmurings that some of these private schools have prospered due to white flight, the book's studies are especially valuable. The text does not confine itself to offering suggestions strictly for diversity in ethnic or racial grounds. Differing religious traditions and sensitivity for those is also discussed.
