Book Overview

From the creator of Your Fat Friend and co-host of the Maintenance Phase podcast, an explosive indictment of the systemic and cultural bias facing plus-size people.

Anti-fatness is everywhere. In What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat, Aubrey Gordon unearths the cultural attitudes and social systems that have led to people being denied basic needs because they are fat and calls for social justice movements to be inclusive of plus-sized people's experiences. Unlike the recent wave of memoirs and quasi self-help books that encourage readers to love and accept themselves, Gordon pushes the discussion further towards authentic fat activism, which includes ending legal weight discrimination, giving equal access to health care for large people, increased access to public spaces, and ending anti-fat violence. As she argues, "I did not come to body positivity for self-esteem. I came to it for social justice."

By sharing her experiences as well as those of others--from smaller fat to very fat people--she concludes that to be fat in our society is to be seen as an undeniable failure, unlovable, unforgivable, and morally condemnable. Fatness is an open invitation for others to express disgust, fear, and insidious concern. To be fat is to be denied humanity and empathy. Studies show that fat survivors of sexual assault are less likely to be believed and less likely than their thin counterparts to report various crimes; 27% of very fat women and 13% of very fat men attempt suicide; over 50% of doctors describe their fat patients as "awkward, unattractive, ugly and noncompliant"; and in 48 states, it's legal--even routine--to deny employment because of an applicant's size.

Advancing fat justice and changing prejudicial structures and attitudes will require work from all people. What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is a crucial tool to create a tectonic shift in the way we see, talk about, and treat our bodies, fat and thin alike.

Must Read to Understand

If I had not read this book, as many others as I've read on the topic and studies referenced and read as well, I would not understand the current anger at Taylor Swift's new video and it's use of "fat." Thanks to this book, and the outright RECEIPTS the author brings... I cannot even explain, it's a special kind of happy for me when someone writes a book like this so perfectly! Not only being one of the social subgrouping to be able to share personal experience, but also ready with pop culture references of wrongs ways- and right ways- to interact, but also bring up study after study BY. NAME! I just... 👏👏👏 You need to read this book. I say that about a lot of books. I'm a bookworm, so I don't know why you would expect anything different 😂 But to be honest, no matter what your size and almost MORE if you have skinny privilege, then you need to read this book. If you struggle with your size, this is a good book. If you struggle with getting doctors to listen to you about your health because they only see your body, buy this book, have the index ready, and read them the studies out of it for them to educate themselves! I hate that it has come to this, but unfortunately it has. 10/10 recommend (As a huge fan of Taylor Swift, I think it's important we hold our celebrities accountable. We'll see if she'll be a Lizzo or a Rebel Wilson. If you read this book, you'd know what that means!)

One of the Most Important Books of Our Time

Everybody needs to read What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat. Author Aubrey Gordon alternates seemlessly between facts/statistics and personal experiences to create a unique reading experience. You will cry, you will cringe, you will get angry, and you will be a better person for all of it. This book not only shows readers how vastly different a thin person's world is from a fat person's world, but it also offers ideas on how we can change our thought patterns, legislation, and more to create a safer, less fat-phobic world.
