Human Papilloma Virus - HPV - is a sexually transmitted disease that is known as the silent killer because its symptoms are so ambiguous most people don't know they have it. A proven precursor to both cervical and penile cancer, HPV can be deadly if left untreated. With 70 know strains of the virus in existence, HPV is widespread and - since condoms don't protect you - it infects over a million people per year in the US alone. This book aims to raise awareness of this disease, as well as other abnormal smear tests, and provide much-needed information and support for those infected, including self-examination that can be done at home.

I was very glad to find a book that covered this topic. The author seems to use scare tactics in her writing, but don't fear the content. If you take the time to read through the book, you will find there is useful and assuring information. It is very important to educate yourself on this diagnosis if you have it, and the author is right that not all doctors have all the information...
The Best Book I've Bought in a Long Time!

I absolutely loved this book! I needed a way to read up on this particular condition, since your doctor will often not explain everything to you. This book covers all sorts of conditions related to HPV, and it gives advice about how to take precautions in preventing it altogether and/or preventing its spread to others. What I thought was most important, though, is that this book helps you to realize the enormity of the situation surrounding HPV - so many people have it, and no one should ever be ashamed that they have developed a problem from it. With proper medical care and screening, this virus and the cancers associated with it can virtually be eliminated! I highly recommend this book if you want a thorough, less complex explanation of this disease.

As a sufferer of a persistent case of this disease, I've spent the past five years digging around the internet for reliable, complete information on HPV. It's all right here. Dr. Palefsky's writing style is natural and easy to read. Makes me wish he were my doctor.
A book long needed for women and health
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
Dr Palefsky has empowered women with knowledge and advice about a virus that affects over 75% of all sexually active women AND men. HPV is the primary cause of all Cervical cancer and before Paps, Cervical cancer was the leading killer of women pre 1940. HPV and Cervical Cancer can go undetected for decades. The link to HPV was only discovered 10 years ago. Due to the nature of society's attitude toward sexuality, very few people, physicians, or organizations have addressed this issue of womens health with competancy or compassion. 80% of our population do not even know what HPV is much less how it affects our health. Most women are cluless as to the cause of abnormal paps, cervical cancer, dysplasia due to HPV. Majority of our society carry this disease yet women are not empowered to help themselves. My hats off to Dr Palefsky for lifting the dark veil off of this health issue to help save the lives of most women and men in our society who are inflicted with this virus. God Bless him. His book was easy to read and very informative with needed facts and no judgemental attitudes. His book is a must for all High school students as well as all adults.
