From 1913 to 1919, Daytonians suffered through some rough times, what with recovering from a flood that devastated the city in 1913, followed by their sons going off to fight during World War I. But if any city had the advantage to rise up, it was Dayton. Situated only 34 miles from the center of the urban population of the United States and 56 miles from the national center of manufacturers, this was an enviable position for an industrial city like Dayton. Products like cash registers, computing scales, golf clubs, refrigeration equipment, automobile ignition systems and electric light generators for the home helped spread the name of Dayton around the world. In that respect the Gem City lived up to its reputation of being the "City of a Thousand Factories". Although the decade would end with the coming of the Great Depression, at least for a short while Daytonians enjoyed a golden period when it looked like prosperity would last forever and the fun would never end - a time when Dayton roared!
