Learning basic sight words that can be recognized quickly is an important skill for young readers. Sight words make up the largest percentage of words in children's reading books. Recognizing these words and feeling comfortable reading them in simple stories is the best way to foster reading confidence. This then encourages children to want to continue to expand their reading vocabulary through reading follow up books with words of increasing difficulty. Olivia and Liam books are designed to gradually introduce new words while allowing children to review earlier learned sight words. Many sight words are not easily sounded out so they must be stored in your child's visual memory. Repetition is important to enable long term memorization, so some sentences are repeated in the book with slight changes such as replacing a noun with a pronoun. Where a more complex noun is used to enhance the story, a picture clue is given above the word. Each book focuses on several sight words with a revisiting of previous book focus words. Focus words for each book are bolded in the text. Gradually letting your child take control of a word, a sentence, and then the book will provide them with both the support and reading freedom they need to become fluent readers. Patience and repetition are key to confident and willing readers who discover the joy and empowerment of reading for themselves. Happy reading! Mr E.
