Set in the late 1970s in Corning, NY, this is a fictional account of tragedy, endurance and the enduring nature of love. On the surface it tells the three week story of twelve year old Samuel Berryman's innocence and his adolescent struggle with trying to be a man amid a tragic backdrop.Beneath the surface, this was my story, a metaphor, my attempt to separate out what was honest gay from the abuse I experienced. It was begun right after the abuse ended, and was written pen on paper at 3 am in a Greek diner in Maitland Florida. Fueled by coffee and a heavy set older waitress who called me "honey," it was completed exactly one year to the day of writing the first word. It's attempt to help failed, however, and was then tucked away for thirty years.Until now.
