William Howard Taft is known as the "reluctant president". He didn't seek the position and was pressured into it by his wife and his good friend, and former president, Theodore Roosevelt. In spite of his lack of enthusiasm, and confidence in his ability, he initiated many changes in labor laws and the economy, even instating the income tax. Much of his life was spent striving towards his personal goal of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, to which he was finally appointed in 1921, 11 years after the end of his presidency. He is now acclaimed as one of the most effective Chief Justices in history.
