Have you ever dreamed of running away to a tropical island? In 1996 Jane Grossman left behind a comfortable life in Chicago and set off on with her husband on their 34-foot sailboat, Iniki, to sail South America. What began as a chance to simplify their lifestyle and to see the islands gradually evolved to a sojourn of self-discovery, renewal and triumph over breast cancer. "Windshifts" is a true sailing adventure that chronicles the wonder and excitement, the difficulties and fears from a woman's perspective. Vivid details and delightful descriptions of exotic lands, cultural interactions and inevitable conflicts of a husband and wife confined to close quarters involve the reader with all of their senses. More importantly, it is a reflection on dealing with the unexpected challenges that confront us all throughout our lives.
From the initial decision making process to pull up anchor, sell the house and sail from Chicago through 75 locks to the Atlantic, I was impressed with the adventure and fascinated with the vivid descriptions. The journal style and Jane's personal manner of writing makes the reader a part of her journey -- through breast cancer treatment, the different moorings and that scary storm! She has even created the marvelous sketches. I highly recommend this book.
Exciting

I was mesmerized by this book. I started reading it in the airport while waiting for my flight and by the time my flight was over, I didn't even realize where the time had gone. The most interesting thing to me is that this is a true story. The people they meet and places they go to are described so vividly that you think you are right there with them. By the time the book was over I was wishing for a sequel. Hopefully, Jane is still in remission from her cancer. I found myself praying for her during her hospital visits and treatment. What a nice couple. I hope to meet them both someday and wish them well.
