Winston Churchill is best known for guiding Great Britain through the terrible days of World War II (1939-1945). He wasnt always in politics. At age 21, he began a military career, and then became a war correspondent. By World War I (1914-1918), he was in charge of the British navy. But it was during World War II that Churchill shone. Upon becoming prime minister in 1940, he told parliament: I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. . . . His inspiring speeches kept British hopes alive during the Nazi bombings. Often pictured with his finger held up in a V for victory sign, Churchill encouraged people to never give in.
