Witchduck Bay: The Grace Sherwood story

One woman, one river, one boat. "I am not a witch," Grace cried out as they tossed her into the water. Witchduck Bay tells the story of Grace Sherwood, the only person in Virginia to be tried by water for witchcraft. She was tossed from a boat into the Lynnhaven River. If she floated she was proved a witch because the pure water rejected her. If she sank, she was proved innocent but might die by drowning. She failed the test and lived to tell about it. Grace and her husband James owned a small farm in Princess Anne County, Virginia on Muddy Creek. She was an herbalist, midwife and water dowser. Some of her neighbors became jealous of her prosperity and accused her of witchcraft, In 1700, the parson died and her beloved husband James shortly after. One by one, her few friends in the parish died. The Queen's councilor, Maximillian Boush, married the parson's widow and tried to force Grace to marry his cousin. Then her land and whatever secrets it held would be his. For twelve years, the parish was run under Boush's tyrannical hand. Finally, a new parson arrived from England and Grace was freed. She told her story only once and only to him. Now it is being retold for all to hear.
