Dutch Reformed Pastor Andrew Murray probes Scripture and the life of Christ in order to teach us how to pray effectually. He asks us to enroll in a new kind of academy. "Jesus has opened a school, in which He trains His redeemed ones, who specially desire it, to have power in prayer. Shall we not enter it with the petition, Lord! it is just this we need to be taught! O teach us to pray." With the Redeemer as our headmaster, Murray gently instructs us on how to experience a thriving relationship with Jesus Christ through the means of prayer.
I am a pastor, and I have been using this book in my devotional life. I began on the first day of August, and have read one chapter per day. The reading for each day is short enough to not be a burden, but meaty enough to give me plenty to think about. Each chapter ends with a prayer which I have made my own. This book really is "a school" of prayer: I'm now on day 19, and I can truly say that I have learned lots and my prayer life has deepened. Even as a pastor with seminary training, I have been challenged by this book. It is a classic that speaks on many levels, and I imagine that I will take this journey again in subsequent years. I heartily recommend this book to anyone, clergy or lay, who wants a stronger prayer life.

I can honestly say that this book was used by the Holy Spirit to powerfuly afect my prayer life. It turned praryer time into a tender and powerful time. I do not think that this book will have the same impact on everyone, but if you like old authors like I do then please read this book. It is written by a man that spent much time in the closet and out of the closet with the Lord.
