Les Savage, Jr. was simply one of the best writers of Westerns ever. Cut down at age 35 by diabetes he nevertheless left behind a rich legacy of over 100 quality short stories and novels along with TV and movie scripts. WOLVES OF THE SUNDOWN TRAIL brings together three of his short stories originally published between 1947 and 1949. WOLVES OF THE SUNDOWN TRAIL includes "The Lash of Senorita Scorpion," "Buckskin Border" and "Wolves of the Sundown Trail." The first, featuring Savage's popular Senorita Scorpion character, has Marshal Powder Welles on the Scorpion's trail for the coldblooded murder for a U. S. Senator. Set in 1844, the second tale follows Shade Cameron, a federal undercover agent, investigating a massacre on the North Dakota-Montana border where the lucrative fur trade has trouble a'brewing. The last story, which also uses the fur trade as a background, centers on Duncan Innes, who has gone west to escape a 500-year old Scottish curse only to find there is no escape no matter how far he runs. All three tales demonstrate Savage's marvelous eye for description and characterization. He creates living, breathing human beings and places them in situations that come alive in the reader's mind. If you love Westerns, you need to look for WOLVES OF THE SUNDOWN TRAIL or any Les Savage books. It doesn't get much better than this. Recommended.
