Book Overview

"An eye-opener...A WOMAN IN RESIDENCE is filled with integrity." PHYLLIS CHSLER This true storry--based on diaries Dr. Michelle Harrison kept throughout her months of residency in OB/GYN--draws us into the serious and thrilling work of delivering new life into the world...and into Dr. Harrison's own struggle to reconcile the often startling difference between patient care and hospital convenience. She writes about her patients, for whom she never had quite enough time; about her collegues, with whom she did not always agree; about the excitement of learning new procedures; about the pressures that never let up. She brings us as close as most of us are likely to come to the intense inner life of a big hospital.

Women In Residence

I am very much interested in stories about medical people and this is a topic of interest as Dr. Michelle Harrison is an OB/GYN. I can say that I am very pleased to have this book among my many favorites in my book collection at home!

Illuminating insight into hospital life

This is the first book I read on my journey into the complex and highly specialized world of medicine. Harrison's journal style account of all the problems she encounters as a woman in residence in a large city hospital are insightful, and heartfelt. Some years later, I worked in a hospital for my research, and Harrisons' observations vividly returned to me. I would highly recommend this book to any female who is considering becoming an MD.

A Real Eye-Opener into doctor manipulation of birth process

I highly recommend this book to any woman preparing to give birth in a hospital. RUN, don't walk, to your nearest midwife and plan a home birth instead! This book, written by a female doctor, makes it clear that you will not have a very wonderful birth experience if you listen to the OB's tell you to 'trust me; everything will be fine'.
