This inspiring, engagingly written book, with its personal approach and global scope, is the first to explore women's increasingly influential role in the wine industry, traditionally a very male-dominated domain. Women of Wine draws on interviews with dozens of leading women winemakers, estate owners, professors, sommeliers, wine writers, and others in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere to create a fascinating mosaic of the women currently shaping the wine world that also offers a revealing insiders' look at the wine industry. To set the stage, Ann B. Matasar chronicles the historical barriers to women's participation in the industry, reviews post-World War II changes that created new opportunities for them, and pays tribute to a few extraordinary nineteenth-century women who left their mark on wine despite the odds against them. She then turns to her primary topic: an accessible discussion of women associated with some of the most prestigious wineries and institutions in both the Old and New Worlds that emphasizes their individual and collective contributions. Matasar also considers issues of importance to women throughout the business world including mentors, networking, marriage, family, education, self-employment versus the corporate life, and risk taking.
This book comes amidst wine's impressive surge in popularity in recent years. It's a candid look at the inner-workings of the wine industry and the previously unrecognized emergence of women as major role-players. Matasar has fittingly chosen to tell this story through very personal recollections of a veritable who's who of the pre-eminent women in wine in the world today. A fascinating read.

As a business woman and wine enthusiast, I found "Women of Wine" a facinating, insightful, thought-provoking examination of women in the wine industry. Ann Matasar respectfully presents their stories, identifies the obstacles they have had to overcome, and highlights their achievements and contributions. She takes a global perspective which makes the book all the more interesting and comprehensive. With the holidays upon us, "Women of Wine" makes a great gift for men and women who appreciate wine.
This Book is a Great Read

Women of Wine is well-written, informative, and witty. Ann Matsar has undertaken to tell the story of how women impact the male-dominated wine industry. In her introduction, Matsar says that people are astonished to discover a unique woman who has conquered age-old prejudices in order to become an exemplary winemaker, winery owner, or a sommelier. But this book is not about that one woman, rather, it pays homage to a growing number of women who wield power and influence within the wine industry. If you love wine - or even if you don't - you will love this book. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful book!

I was given "Women in Wine" as a gift from a friend who shares my love for wine literature. What a wonderful read! So many wine books are either fluff or dully academic. This is neither. "Women in Wine" is an informative book that you can curl up with in front of the fire. The stories of these remarkable women make `Women in Wine" a compelling read for just about anyone (not just the wine guy or gal). This is the only book I have ever read (or even heard about) with such a global perspective on women in the wine world. How refreshing to see past California for a change! I am going to order a few more copies of "Women in Wine" just to have around the house for those last minute holiday gifts that always seem to pop up. What a sensational find!
