This book is awesome! As a 36 year old Mom who is back in college to complete her degree, I used this book in a refresher course for adult students--- I wish this book had been used when I took Eng 101 years ago!

Wordsmith: A Guide to College Writing is one of the better handbook/reader combinations I have seen. The format is easy to follow, the tone is conversational without becoming patronizing, and the examples are plentiful. I especially like the brief exercises provided because they are specific to the concepts covered without being overwhelming. The book's three parts, composition, grammar and readings are just the right blend of help in these major areas. The only down side to the book is a minor one. The example readings are very brief (2-3 pages), but each reading has a series of outstanding questions about language, vocabulary, and structure.Overall, I'm tickled silly to have found a writing book that my freshman composition students both learn from and enjoy!
