I read this book for a graduate level English pedagogy course on how to teach writing. The book is meant for English instructors of children in grades 7-12. The book begins by teaching students to write what they already know and also the easiest form of writing: description. Beginning with this personal and uncomlicated base, the book proceeds in steps, each chapter bringing a higher order level of thinking/writing as well as moving the student writer farther from his or her starting position. The culmination of this writing process is persuasive writing that has effective tone and voice. This book would be extremely helpful to the teacher of children's writing as it very nicely explains a sensible approach to the writing process. The examples are many and well done.
